“When we asked for a daughter we were sent a princess.” – Sally Huss
One of my last sessions in Belgium was a princess session and when this family showed up–they brought not one or two dresses but more than I could even count! They were tumbling out of every door of the car and the shoes were in the back! These little girls had such a blast playing in the park and having tea together and I had a blast capturing their beauty, grace, and spunky personalities. It’s so great to have the chance to work with clients again because it’s like seeing old friends and having a chance to play together again!

Our favorite Wild Child is THREE!
We had grand plans and dreams for this little man’s third birthday shoot but in the end we settled on taking him to the woods with all of his dinosaurs and letting him play. In the end, it was everything everyone wanted! He had a blast (he definitely didn’t want to leave) and so did we while we watched him play. I absolutely adore how these photos came out and I am going to miss this crazy kid when we move!

I worked with this Ukrainian family a few months ago and they had such an amazing energy and I so loved playing with them, for that’s what our session was, play! When mama spoke with me last, she suggested we come out to Château de Beloeil for her next session because it was so gorgeous. So here we are a few weeks before my move at a château for more gorgeous family pictures of this amazing family!
I was thrilled when I watched them walk up because I suspected they were wearing some traditional clothes from the Ukraine and I love how unique and personal their choice was.
We explored the grounds and had as much fun as we could and I think it shows through as much as this family’s love for each other.
This Wild Child is turning THREE so that meant family pictures and as you’ll see next week a special session just for him!
We headed out to the local Château de Beloeil for these pictures and I selected a series of my favorite of little M playing with mom and dad because it so captured the beauty that is his energy and enthusiasm. He’s such a sweet little boy with more energy than anyone I ever met and he’s finally warmed up to me, he kept taking my hand to walk as we explored the grounds.
Working with wild families like this brings me so much joy. One of the things, I think, that sets me apart as photographer is that I come to the session with a lot of patience and care. When M runs away from me, I run after him! When he runs towards me, I get ready to snap one with his hair flying back and a huge grin on his face. That patience helps everyone stay calm and happy and shows in the portraits we end up with. It’s so important for everyone to find a photographer that’s willing to work with them and take the time to get to know your family and work with them. This is an intimate art, making memories, and you need the right person for your family to do it.

“In a child’s eyes, a mother is a goddess. She can be glorious or terrible, benevolent or filled with wrath, but she commands love either way. I am convinced that this is the greatest power in the universe.” ― N.K. Jemisin, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
Years and years ago, I decided I was going to do EVERYTHING RIGHT as a parent. Teenagers are dumb. There is no right way. There is the way we choose, the path we walk, and in that way it is right for us and that is all that matters.
Years ago when I learned about the power of breastfeeding, I knew, I KNEW that I would nurse my children.
A year and a half ago when that baby was born–despite much apprehension about the actual breastfeeding, I was determined to make it work. But we hit a snag and my little J and I needed help. I was distraught and lost because this was what I wanted and the mum featured today changed that. She calmed the storm and put us back on course. She humbly turns all the credit back to mom and baby–but no ship arrives in port without a navigator.
As a thank you for making our lives better, I wanted to give her a gift so I invited myself over, sat them down, and started making them laugh. I asked mummy to tell embarrassing stories (she did not disappoint) and the girls to share what they loved about mum and they laughed nearly the entire time! Their family is one of love and laughter and empowerment–because both daughters loved how much their mum listened to them, valued them, and treated them with respect.
Thank you to my friend, midwife, and lactation consultant. You will always hold a special place in my heart!
Bonus, my mess maker entertaining himself at the piano while I worked!
“Happiness [is] only real when shared.” ―Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild
When our boys were itty, I met this mama and I have loved how hard she works and how much she loves her baby. With both her and daddy being in the military, their life is anything but easy! They travel a very difficult path and I don’t envy them but I have so much respect for how much grace and love they use to get through it. Mom and dad are so in love with baby and so in love with each other, it’s a treat to have shared this morning with them!
“I want adventure in the great wide somewhere! I want it more than I can tell!” – Belle from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”
Another day spent with royalty, how lucky am I?! This little girl’s golden locks slay me every time I see her! They’re too perfect. I loved the chance to reconnect with this family (from one of my FIRST EVER family sessions!) to capture this little princess on a cloudy Belgian morning. She loved the chance to run away and climb this little bridge, rose in hand. I know for a fact, this daddy’s girl knows her beast and he’ll scare away any boy that comes near until she’s at least 35!
I love, love, love going to Villers Abbey for family portraits, it’s hands down my favorite location. I always have a blast trying to find new ways to use this location to showcase the beauty that is family.
This time, I talked another family of 6 to come with me to check out the ruins. The kids loved playing in the ruins (almost nothing is off limits here) and I loved getting them to play and laugh together. I even got quite a few solid laughs from the toddler! Go me!
We were racing the clock at this location–they were ringing the bell at us to get out–and it was well worth it I think!
I have been wanting to explore lifestyle photography more and I had a great couple to work with on my last maternity session so when they welcomed me into their home, I worked hard to capture more of the beauty that is their love! Mini Mama Maternity!
I am so amazed at how sweet they are together and how quickly they relax and how many great shots I can get of them interacting and loving each other. Their little girl showed up early and I know they are going to rock as parents. I’m so thrilled for them and their little girl is so lucky to grow up in a household of love! Congrats again!
I love doing sessions in Mons because the backdrop is so pretty and the variety is so great so when we scheduled this little guys birthday shoot it was my first choice. When I was driving into the city though, 4-5 times a crossing guard stopped me so bikes could ride through… and a exhibition filled with bike ramps took over the Grand Place (town square) so a city that is normally empty on Sunday mornings proved quite a challenge for us on this family shoot.
With plenty of distracting bikers at every location, and some options completely blocked off, we worked trekked through the city in the heat and we even got a few smiles from this tough cookie. It’s so hard to believe he’s turning two already but the numbers don’t lie… 2 it is!
Happy Birthday, little lion!
