Lifestyle Newborn – Mini Mama and Mini Bebe

My first maternity clients were a gorgeous couple I got to photograph not once but twice before their little one rushed her arrival (yep she was a month early, healthy as can be!)! I had such a great time with this couple before their baby arrived and now they’re even more in love and more fun to work with. I’m so thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to work with them from bump to baby!

Newborn – Bigger than a Rugby Ball

Back again for her last set of newborn pictures, this little girl is too cute next to her dad’s rugby ball and wrapped up in this cute peach wrap! I have so much fun with these posed newborn sessions because they’re a chance to play with the things mum and dad love!

Thank you so much to this family for working with me. I had such a wonderful time with you and your little one!

Coming soon to a Minot near you!

Lifestyle – Littlest Girl at Home

When I got the chance to enjoy this little girl again (when there wasn’t a heat wave in Belgium), I was so excited. Her parents were so much fun to work with and I just adored how much they adored her and each other.

Their home was so nice and so open and bright. It was really just the an enjoyable session start to finish and I got some posed shots which you can see next time!

Stay tuned Minot, ND–I’ll be seeing you soon for these and more!

Newborn – We Meet Again

I was lucky enough to work with this little baby again for my very first posed newborn session. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out and I enjoyed the experience of working with a super sleepy, super chill little dude. He was so easy to work with that I was able to take my time and capture some great images and learn a lot about poses and backdrops for newborns (which is prettttty hard, no joke!).

Congrats again to this gorgeous family! I so enjoyed working with you! See more of this little man here: Fresh 48 – Little Bitty Love

Fresh48 – Hey There Little One

I got to see a new hospital in Belgium this time and it was gigantic! I’d never been out to the hospital this family delivered at and it was surprising how big and tall the hospital was, which is a silly thing to observe but the other hospitals I’ve visited have been squat and sprawling so this was a fun change… again there was a heat wave so I didn’t get any swaddled pictures of this little darling but I loved capturing mom and dad with the little one and each other. They were so happy. Fresh 48s just make me happy inside because it’s just so much love in the room. Thank you so much to this family for letting me enjoy their happiness!

Fresh 48 – Little Bitty Love

I have baby fever but since we found out we’re going to Minot ND in October, we’re holding off just a touch so we don’t have a blizzard baby. Until then, I hope I get to do a lot more of these Fresh 48 Sessions because they are too fun!

I love that every time I open up my images I’m falling in love over and over again with them. This little man was so calm and didn’t get phased by a single click of the shutter. Mama and Papa were so in love with each other and baby. The session was just amazing.

Fresh 48 – Loved Little Man

In Belgium, most families spend 4 nights in the hospital as standard procedure and a cot is provided for daddies to stay in the room every night too. It’s a different experience having a baby in Belgium and it wraps you up in a world of newness and gives you time to breathe before you walk into what is, essentially, a new world. And, for most mommies and daddies, it feels like you’re breaking out of prison by the time you FINALLY get discharged.

I got to go back to the hospital that brought Mess Maker J into the new world of family that, from the moment I walked in, exuded happiness. Mom and Dad couldn’t stop smiling and loving on this little baby. They were so natural with their little man and each other, that the session flew by. I can’t wait to work with this little family again. They’ll be coming by the studio with big brother for an Easter session in a few days so stay tuned for more squishy, wrinkly baby!

So, without further ado, enjoy the newness of this Belgian made mama, daddy, and baby!

Thank you to the little family that welcomed me into their brand new world, it was a beautiful visit!

Where I Started

Almost 13 months ago, I had a little bundle of joy. Mess Maker J. And Mess Maker J. is perfect in every way.

I was fortunate enough to find Melinda Mae Photography who took beautiful pictures of my son and his messy parents. I realized the value of family photography, of turning a group of people who think they look horrible into a piece of art. I am forever grateful for the beautiful work Melinda did for us over the course of J.’s first year. Here is one of his newborn photos.

After watching her work, I’ve been scrambling to catch up.

I started out with the point and shoot my MIL gave my husband for his birthday the year we moved to Belgium. And my goal was to do some one month milestone photos.

Here is one from the little shoot that I did with him at a hotel while my husband was working on a business trip.

Meet Mess Maker J. at 1 month. He’s stinking adorable, I know. He is/was/always will be perfect. Aw.

While J. is perfect, the pictures I take of him are not. But I’m working on it.

I shot this with a Canon PowerShot SX700 HS  in Auto but this model does offer manual controls so it’s a worthy camera for those of you looking for something less intimidating and involved.

Let’s talk about what’s wrong with this image and why.

Background. That brown blanket on the bed is a huge distraction. I have come to learn how annoying and hard it is to edit stuff out of an image. So, for things other than capturing Little Mister playing, I remove EVERYTHING and check my playback constantly to see what I’m getting in my shots and reshoot then and there so I can avoid trying to edit it out. Key word is trying, I suck at this.

Motion blur and focus. EXIF: ISO 800, SS1/60, Aperture 3.2. An ISO of 800 usually causes noise, it does on the camera I’m currently working with too. So I try to avoid it, but it’s necessary when you don’t have enough light. It probably caused some of the focus to soften too but the biggest culprit ruining the image is the shutter speed. 1/60 is barely enough to account for handshake let alone bebe J. flailing about. So 1/125 is okay for a slow moving baby/kid but 1/200-250 is definitely better.

This is my true start at photography and it was a bumpy one. Fortunately, it doesn’t matter. I still love my little Mess Maker and the photos I took of him. The truth is, I can’t go back and get better photos, kids don’t stay little for long. SO take them, blurry and dark and grainy, take them anyway.
